Service Learning Semester One Reflection

Our SAS grade five class went to the Christalite Methodist Home for a field-trip. I had a partner and we worked with one resident to make a christmas tree & ornament. Together we talked about a lot of things. Such as favorite colors and what languages we spoke. They were a bit grumpy. I think it's because when you get older you get more grumpy. But I am still excited to go next time, next semester!

To prepare for our trip my teacher, Ms. Hooykaas bought some materials. My class, i305 voted on what craft to do. We chose depending on what is not too much money, not using sharp things and convenient crafts to do. My group thought of rock painting but no one really voted for it. I think it is because the residents could drop it on their foot! Ouch, I don't think that would be very good.

First, one of the assistants there gave us a wonderful tour. We walked around the whole building. There was a computer, play room, massage room, dorms ect. I found interesting was that 8-10 people share a room because I thought sharing a room with one person is enough. I don't share a room. But I know it would be kind of hard.

Together my partner and I made the crafts with this kind man named Christopher. During this activity our resident wanted us to do it all by our self. We did ask him a second time if he wanted to try it but he just grumbled. We took that as a no. I guess he was starting to get annoyed since we asked him twice so we stopped asking him. I wondered why he didn't want to talk. I don't think I'll ever know though.

The biggest thing I learned was that we should be grateful for what we have. I mean the residents only came there was because none of their family could take them in or even want to. To be honest, I would be not very happy. It's also because of the environment they live in. It made me feel bad. It encouraged me to help them. I am going to find some way to help the people around this world.

I am going to the Christalite Methodist Home again in semester two. The next time I go I think I will try to think of more questions to ask. I feel this way because when I was there we had nothing to talk about so it was kind of quiet. Except for asking him what he wants to put on. I think next time I should think of things to ask before we go. I hope in semester two I will remember! I know I will because I care very much.

The most interesting thing to me was that it actually was a better place then I thought it would be. I understand that it was not cleanest place ever but it had a massage room! A computer, a game room. At least they had entertainment. I honestly thought they would just have a room and a place to eat. Finally a tiny bathroom. It is so sweet that so many people must have volunteered there.
